Jürgen Paas

Overview

Jürgen Paas is a German contemporary artist known for his innovative work in abstraction and material-based art. Born in 1958 in Germany, Paas has developed a distinctive visual language that blends painting, object-making, and installation.

He is particularly recognized for his use of unconventional materials, such as industrial fabrics, foils, and textured surfaces, which he manipulates to explore structure, light, and spatial perception. Rather than focusing on traditional brushwork, Paas often constructs layered compositions that emphasize physicality and surface tension, creating works that sit between painting and sculpture.

In the "Jukebox" and "Target" series, wall installations made of coloured PVC strips and aluminium rolls take centre stage in the artistic composition, exerting an almost psychedelic effect on the viewer's eye.

Over the course of his career, he has exhibited widely in Germany and internationally, with his works featured in galleries, museums, and public collections.

Today, Jürgen Paas continues to live and work in Essen, contributing to contemporary art through his ongoing exploration of materials and form.
