Ulrike Zerzer
“An eternity among us, and one day in my hands. Earth.
I believe I understand its essence; it allows me to give it form. Without force or prescription, it begins to grow—and I grow with it. I accompany it; it teaches me.”
Born in 1979 in Schwarzach/St. Veit, Ulrike Zerzer spent her childhood and youth in her family home in St. Johann im Pongau, Salzburg. Even at an early age, a clear affinity for creative expression became apparent. She chose to pursue her education at the Technical School for Sculpture in Hallein and subsequently studied at the University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz. Over the course of her artistic development, a profound passion for organic forms has crystallized—particularly in recent years. These forms have captivated her to such an extent that she now considers them her defining artistic trajectory.
Ulrike Zerzer refers to her objects as Earth Movements. Within them, she reveals flowing textures characteristic of viscous, plastic masses as they are shaped into bizarre formations under the pressure of external forces. One might be reminded of solidified lava flows, of tectonic folds and faults in the Earth’s surface, of terrestrial natural forces, or of the silhouettes of mountain ranges—yet none of this is meant in a literal sense. What remains at its conclusion is nothing more—and nothing less—than structure, and the aesthetics inherent within it.
